About this winery

It was in 1985 in Mendavia that Barón de Ley settled in an old monastery, in the Navarrese region of DOCa Rioja. The cellar has positioned itself as a specialist in long-aging wines thanks to its Reservas and Grandes Reservas.

Product notes

The terroir of Barón de Ley Reserva is located in the Rioja region, characterized by well-drained clay-limestone soils rich in minerals. This terroir benefits from a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cool winters, promoting slow and steady grape ripening. The optimal sun exposure and average altitude contribute to a balance between acidity and aromatic concentration, giving the wine its typicality and complexity.

Production notes

Barón de Ley Reserva is crafted with meticulous care, adhering to the traditional methods of Rioja. The grapes, mainly Tempranillo, are hand-harvested at full maturity to ensure an optimal balance between sugar, acidity, and aromas. After harvesting, the grapes are carefully sorted before being destemmed and crushed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing precise temperature management to preserve the wine’s freshness and aromatic complexity. This phase lasts about two weeks. Then, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in tanks, softening its acidity and enhancing its structure. The aging is mainly done in American oak barrels for 20 months, imparting notes of vanilla, toast, and spices while refining the tannins. Finally, the wine is bottled where it rests for at least 24 months before release, allowing perfect harmony of aromas and improved aging potential.

Tasting notes

Barón de Ley Reserva is a Spanish red wine from the Rioja region, made primarily from Tempranillo, with smaller proportions of Graciano and Maturana Tinta. It has a bright ruby color. On the nose, it offers complex aromas of red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, accompanied by notes of coconut, toffee, and a hint of wild herbs. On the palate, it is powerful and full-bodied, with a smooth texture and a long finish. In the aftertaste, the flavors of red fruits and herbs reappear, creating a balanced and concentrated experience. This wine is recommended to be served between 15°C and 18°C. It pairs well with dishes such as roasted meats, grilled lamb chops, aged cheeses, or sauced dishes. It is also appreciated with spicy dishes or grilled meats.
