About this winery

El Coto de Rioja is organized as if it were twelve small wineries. Each one with the optimum conditions for its job, where each part of the process is handled independently. The vinification is carried out in small tanks that do not exceed 50,000 liters and all our red wines are aged in oak barrels, which are replaced annually. This is the only way to ensure that the work in the vineyard produces the results we really want. The vineyard is the main source of the wines’ quality. For this...

Product notes

The grapes of this 100% Tempranillo come from sustainably farmed vines planted on clay-limestone, iron-rich, and alluvial soils. The altitude and climatic influence of the Rioja Alta and Alavesa subregions bring freshness and elegance to the fruit. The Rioja Crianza follows the strict rules of the appellation: a minimum aging of 12 months in American oak barrels, followed by an additional 6 months of bottle aging before release. This certified organic version combines structure, finesse, and authenticity.

Production notes

The harvest is carried out by hand to preserve the integrity of the grapes. After controlled fermentation in the cellars of Oyón, the wine is aged in American oak barrels for more than 12 months, then refined in the bottle for an additional 6 months. This process softens the tannins and harmoniously integrates the woody aromas with the fruitiness of the Tempranillo, while respecting the traditional style of Rioja.

Tasting notes

This wine has an intense ruby red color. On the nose, it reveals classic aromas of cherry, ripe plum, sweet spices (vanilla, cinnamon), and toasted wood. On the palate, it offers lively acidity, smooth and polished tannins, and a generous texture, while maintaining a nice freshness. The balance between red and black fruits, balsamic notes, and woody touches gives it a typically Riojan character—both rich and elegant—with a persistent, slightly smoky finish. It pairs perfectly with rich and flavorful dishes, especially grilled meats (barbecue, lamb chops, ribeye), Iberian charcuterie (Ibérico ham), aged cheeses (Manchego, sheep’s milk tomme), as well as slow-cooked dishes like rabbit with prunes or pork with maple and rum. It also goes well with Mediterranean cuisine, tagines, paella, and Portuguese grilled chicken. Serve ideally between 15 °C and 17 °C to fully reveal its aromatic richness and freshness.
